2010 Syrah Rhone-Style blend
Aromas of currants, spice and black cherry. Flavors of clove, earth and mocha. Medium to full bodied with polished tannins and extended finish. A wonderful Rhone-style blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache and 2% Petite Syrah that is well-rounded and smooth.
Premiere Coastal Vineyard - Los Alamos Soils: Hillside property with sandy loam Clone: 887 & Alban Rootstock: 420A. Premiere Coastal Vineyard sits in the cooler northern section of Santa Barbara County. Here, the east-west orientation of California's coastal range brings cooling morning fog and ocean breezes, which give way to warn afternoon sun. The sandy soils provide excellent drainage and limit vigor-- the trick to producing small berries. PC is our only vineyard featuring the "Syrah Noir" clone- a loose-clustered grape that tends to produce ink-black wines. Working closely with vineyard manager, Kevin Merril, we have selected a small block, farmed with an extremely high level of attention. Kevin, who lives on the property, promotes sustainable viticulture and also oversees management of nearby White Hawk Vineyard. The wines exhibit the same core of acidity balanced by meat and blackberry flavors found at White Hawk.
The challenging 2010 California wine grape harvest is in and owners and winemakers are relieved and enthusiastic about the quality. A wet spring followed by a late start and long, cool growing season ending with a heat spike allowed grapes to reach maturity, with several regions reporting slightly lower sugars, higher acids and deep colors and flavors. The season was a balancing act with some winegrowers trimming fruit or pulling leaves to assure full fruit maturity. Regions reported lower to normal yields. The good news is that what was brought in displays remarkable quality throughout the state with several vintners predicting a more restrained, elegant style of wine. – The Wine Institute
By The Numbers
pH: 3.77 TA: 6.4 g/L
Aged: 28 months in French oak (Francois Freres and Billon) - 30% new
Blend: 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache & 2% Petite Sirah
"Easy blackberry with roasted plum and orange peel, plus notes of clove, crème de cassis, leather and forest floor. A satisfying and exceptionally balanced wine, medium-full bodied, superbly integrated, with complex flavors coaxed gently on the palate by a luxurious, soft-grain texture. I’d suggest this a Syrah for Cabernet lovers — really — absent the glossy, fruit-forward nature common in Central Coast Syrahs, this wine shows excellent fruit-savory proportions that allow organic notes to sing to the heavens. 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache, 2% Petit Sirah. An excellent wine."
